A recent study revealed that elite female athletes, disproportionately, come from smaller towns & cities.

The study took a look at the birthplaces of all American-born female athletes playing in the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA). The results of the study were published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport.

The data which was taken from the U.S. Census and the sports association, found that about 57% of all female American adolescents were born in cities with a population of less than 500,000 people. Almost, 85% of professional female golfers and about 80% of professional female soccer players were born in cities or towns that were less dense. The difference was even more profound as the size of the cities and towns grew smaller.

Mia Hamm who scored more international goals in her career, than any other player (male or female) was born in Selma, Ala. (pop:20,000) and grew up in Chapel Hill, N.C. (pop:54,000). Vijay Singh take heed and listen…. you have reason to be intimidated by women!
